The Commonwealth Short Story Prize started in 2012 with the launch of Commonwealth Writers. The Prize seeks out talented writers and brings stories from new and emerging voices to an international audience. Stories often come from countries with little or no publishing infrastructure and from places that are marked by geographical, geopolitical or economic isolation.

WORTH

  • Regional winners each receive £2,500 and the opportunity to be published online by Granta magazine.
  • The overall winner receives £5,000.

ELIGIBILITY

  • All citizens of all Commonwealth countries.
  • Dual citizens are eligible, as long as one of the countries is a member of the Commonwealth.
  • Open to all citizens aged 18 and over.
  • Entry from previous regional winners are accepted
  • Your submission must be unpublished in any print or online publication, with the exception of personal websites
  • Entries acceptable languages are Bengali, Chinese, English, French, Greek, Malay, Portuguese, Samoan, Swahili, Tamil, and Turkish.
  • You cannot enter a story you have submitted in previous years.
  • The prize is only open to short fiction, but it can be in any fiction genre–science fiction, speculative fiction, historical fiction, crime, romance, literary fiction–and you may write about any subject you wish.
  • The story must be between 2,000 and 5,000 words; the title does not count towards the word limit
