Now in its third year the CcHUB Summer of Code, which holds annually is now open for registration.

The Summer of Code is a 4 week, fun, interactive programme to introduce kids aged 5-18 years to computer programming. The first Summer of Code held in 2014 with one class and admitted 34 kids aged 9-14. Based on requests from parents, the subsequent year the Summer of Code had 3 classes, for Juniors (kids aged 5-8 and 9-14) and seniors (teens aged 15-18 years). In 2016, the Summer of Code is expanding outside of Lagos to hold in Abuja, Oyo, Osun and Enugu states.

The Summer of Code, is run by CcHUB’s Edtech unit re:learn, which is focused on using technology to identify smarter ways to help kids learn; one of which is by teaching kids computer science and how to program computers. In light of this, there has been a global push in recent years for integrating Computer Science as a part of the national K-12 curriculum for kids, especially in countries such as Estonia, Finland, the U.K and the U.S.

In a world that is increasingly becoming digital, learning not just how to use computers but how computers work is fast becoming a critical skill. This transforms kids from being consumers of technology to understanding how technology works and becoming makers.

At the Summer of Code, the curriculum emphasizes a blend of logical thinking and creativity. Lessons are project based which transforms learning into an interactive, fun and more personalized experience for each individual. Kids don’t just learn new tools to express their creativity but are also improve their problem solving and critical thinking abilities.

In addition to the above, a strong component of the programme is built around development of soft-skills in the area of project management – with kids managing their projects with resources available (time etc), collaboration – working in teams, communication – sharing ideas with team members, and presentation skills. To crown it all, the programme ends with a Demo Day, where kids get the opportunity to present their projects to family and friends.

As schools all across the country prepare to wind down for the long holidays, parents (and kids!) are seeking for exciting and rewarding opportunities to keep the kids engaged all through the holiday. There’s no better way than combining fun, creativity and learning to keep the kids smiling all through. Not to mention the opportunity to meet and make new friends.

Registration is on a first-come basis, so parents are advised to register their kids early.
