On International Women’s Day, UNESCO is launching a call for nominations to the first edition of the new UNESCO Prize for girls’ and women’s education.
The annual Prize honours outstanding innovation and contributions made by individuals, institutions and organizations to advance girls’ and women’s education. It is the first UNESCO Prize of this nature and is unique in showcasing successful projects that improve and promote the educational prospects of girls and women and in turn, the quality of their lives.
Supported by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Prize is conferred on two laureates awarded with USD 50,000 each, to recognize their exceptional contributions and support their work in advancing education for girls and women.
Worth
- The Prize will be awarded annually to winners and consist of a monetary award of USD 50,000 for each winner
Eligibility
Candidates shall have made outstanding innovation in and significant contributions to supporting and/or promoting girls’ and women’s education. Prizes may be conferred upon individuals, institutions, or non-governmental organizations that have effectively promoted the advancement of girls’ and women’s education, with a focus on,
- Girls’ transition from primary education to lower-secondary educationand their completion of full basic education;
- Adolescent girls’ and young women’s acquisition of literacy skills;
- Creating gender-responsive and safe teaching-learning environments, free of school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV);
- The development of gender-responsive teaching attitudes and practices among teachers; and
- Adolescent girls’ and young women’s acquisition of knowledge and skills to help their smooth transition from school to work and lead a fulfilling life
