2021 Competitions

The technology-enabled Innovation Competition is an activity on the Strengthening Youth Advocacies to End Female Genital Mutilation across Africa project. It seeks to tap into the creativity and innovation of young people on the continent to mobilize for change on ending female genital mutilation. The tech-enabled innovation competition will be launched to harness the creativity of young people in finding solutions to the problem of female genital mutilation and gender-based violence.

The competition will be a platform for young people in selected African countries who are using technology to contribute in curbing the problem of female genital and gender-based violence to:

  • Showcase the workings of their innovations
  • Network with other young innovators
  • Win a prize fund to further develop their innovations

WORTH

The competition offers prizes for the best 3 innovations.

Entries will be judged by experts and the best 3 entries will be awarded cash prizes. In addition, consolation prizes will be awarded to 4 others.

Prizes

  • 1st Prize: 10, 000 USD
  • 2nd Prize: 5, 000 USD
  • 3rd Prize: 3, 000 USD
  • Consolation Prizes: 1,750 USD for four runners up.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Participants in the competition must be between the ages 18-35.
  • The competition is open to entries from only Africans living in the following countries: Kenya, the Gambia, Nigeria, Senegal, Uganda, Somalia, Guinea, Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan.
  • Justification: The countries above are the countries of implementation for the project. Focusing on the countries would provide a platform to showcase efforts from young people in these countries with high FGM burden in leveraging on technology to provide solutions to the problem of FGM.
  • Both innovations that have already been built and new innovations are eligible.
  • NOTE: New innovations must have a working prototype that can be tested. The cost of developing the prototype will be on the innovator.
  • The Proposed technology-enabled solutions must target GBV with a specific focus on FGM and must have strategies to curb and eventually eliminate it.
  • Justification: This competition is an activity within a project that is focused on ending FGM (a form of gender-based violence) so innovations MUST contribute to ending FGM.
  • Entries from both individuals and groups of not more than 2 are eligible.
  • Timeframe – The Call for entries will be open and promoted online for a period of 3 weeks. After the close of entries, there would be a period of between 3 to 4 weeks when Judges would review entries, provide feedback and announce winners.
  • Young girls, as well as persons living with disabilities, are strongly encouraged to apply.
