The Filmmaker competition elevates original voices that bring a fresh perspective to storytelling. The three winners receive $5,000 (USD), an FX9 Cinema Line Camera (plus lens), and are flown, along with the shortlist, to Los Angeles for a two-day workshop program and a black-tie awards ceremony. 

Established by Creo and sponsored by Sony, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards is a major new annual awards program for short films devoted to supporting and elevating independent filmmakers and creators from across the globe. Set apart by its exceptional prize, the Awards provide successful filmmakers with invaluable opportunities in the form of a trip to Los Angeles and to the historic Sony Pictures Studio in Culver City, California, where they gain exclusive access to experts and unparalleled insight into the inner workings of the industry. Winners additionally receive cash prizes and a range of Sony Digital Imaging equipment. Free to enter, the Awards comprise three competitions: Filmmaker, Student Filmmaker and Future Format, and are judged by a panel of leading figures. By supporting talents in film, video and storytelling, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards provides a gateway for the development of creative excellence.

ELIGIBILITY

  • If you are under 18, you can enter the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards must you must have your parent’s or legal guardian’s consent to participate.
  • You should be studying at, or have graduated in 2022 from, an institution,  that teaches higher education filmmaking and enrolled in a filmmaking element/module
  • You can enter the competition that is currently open when you graduate. For example, if you graduate in the summer of 2022 you can enter the 2023 Awards currently open. 
  • Entry is free for everyone.
  • To enter any of the three competitions you must hold the ownership rights and/or have the permission of the rights holder to the film you are submitting. The two-day workshop program at the Sony studio lot in Culver City, California is aimed at Directors.
