Dear Colleagues, Partners and Friends, in celebration of Africa Youth Day, the African Union Commission will host a special gathering on 1 November, 2015. This is an opportunity to hear and see the great work that young people are doing across the continent! Africa Youth Day is a day set aside every year to promote the increased recognition of youth as key agents for social change, economic growth and sustainable development in all areas of African Society. It is an occasion to celebrate the youth on the continent, opportunity to contribute and channel youth motivation, energy and creativity towards the achievement of the African agenda. All young people contribute to shaping society to lead it towards political, social and economic renewal.

The purpose of this event is also, to contribute and channel the youth voices, energy and idealism to reinforce the efforts towards the achievement of sustainable development in Africa. The theme for the 2015 celebration is “African Year of Human Rights towards Agenda 2063 – the Africa We Want” with a special focus on the rights of Young Women. The chosen theme will nest on and magnify the preamble to the African Union First Ten-Year Implementation Plan for Agenda 2063.

This is a call for youth heroes advocating for, promoting and protecting human rights towards Agenda 2063 with a special focus on the rights of Young Women.

Africa Youth Day 2015 celebrations will take the format of an Expo. Young people from across the continent will do presentations, share photos and videos of the work that they are doing locally, regionally and continentally to promote and protect human rights. You and your organization can be a part of this celebration by sending a short description of the work you are doing accompanied by any pictures or videos that showcase your human rights work.

We encourage young Africans working towards the promotion and protection of human rights to tell the African Union Commission:

  • What is the description of the work or project you are doing?
  • What area of human rights advocacy, promotion or protecting are you involved with?
  • Which country or region does your work affect?
  • What is the name of your project or your organization?
