Data from a 2021 Global Gender Gap Index by the World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked Nigeria 139th out of 153 countries. This is the worst ranking since 2006. The world bank has also reported from a collection of development indicators that gender equality in Nigeria will be less than 1% in 2022.
Nigeria is growing to become the largest population on the continent and as a country with a vastly large youth population. There has become an enormous need to leverage the strength of its youth population to sustain this growing economy. The divide between the youth and elderly in the country’s political sphere is mainly noticeable as young Nigerians do not have much of significant advantage to participate in leadership roles. Even more so, women have been left behind the most. Nigeria has been recording low participation of women in both elective and appointive positions. We can clearly see this in The national average of women’s political participation in Nigeria, as it has remained 6.7 percent in elective and appointive positions.
The Nigerian government has made efforts to implement actions to the policies that affect the youth population, none the less there is a need to hasten those efforts to create a more inclusive system that allows its younger female generation, to brace up and take on leadership roles confidently.
The changemakers fellowship will seek to establish and amplify the voices of young female youth leaders and progressive religious and cultural leaders to increase their engagement and participation in leadership. With aims to create awareness and building the capacity of young Nigerian women to further equip them with various skills needed to increase their engagement and participation in leadership.
