CALL FOR APPLICATIONS-DESPLAY Africa (Youth Democracy Academy, Season 8)
The 2012 Mo Ibrahim Index and Assessment of Governance in Africa indicated that while some African countries are taking concrete steps and achieving commendable progress in developing their nation and improving the lives of its people, the big name nations of Africa are performing rather below expectations. For instance, Nigeria which is Africa’s largest nation and blessed with huge natural and human resources is ranked 43 out of 52, among the bottom ten nations. This new decade is a decade in which there is a rising search for 21st century leadership and governance to mitigate our challenges and transform Africa, especially Nigeria into a world class nation. Interestingly the one group most affected by Nigeria’s current situation are the youth who represent the highest bundle of unemployed citizens. It is no wonder that there is a rising and growing re-tooling, re-engaging and activism among youth with government for better governance. This quest is rising like a tension that can be touched in the atmosphere.
The affirmative is that there is a rising civic consciousness among our teeming youth, the prevailing opportunity is in empowering the youth with the requisite 21st century skills and knowledge that can make our engagement and activism effective and impactful. There is indeed a rising critical mass of youth, positive change is imminent, the tipping point looks not from afar but within the horizon, persons of determination can tilt the balance but it takes persons of imagination and skill to nurture transformation. DESPLAY Africa remains the leading and most consistent annual youth democracy academy within West Africa Nigeria that since 2005 has been equipping and raising young people on quality democracy culture, governance and development. Funded annually by the National Endowment for Democracy NED USA since 2005 and endorsed by the World Youth Movement for Democracy, we are very excited to once more open the Call for Application to interested youths across Africa to apply for Season 8 of Democracy Series for Participatory Learning and Actions by Youth (DESPLAY) Africa.
Since inception, DESPLAY Africa enjoyed patronage from youth in Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Cameroon and South Africa. This is your turn to join a robust and growing community of young democrats.
What DESPLAY Season 8 Offers:
- Admission Slots for ONLY 35 young people within Africa (especially from West and Central African Countries).
- Three (3) Semesters/Workshops of 4 days each in a different state and region of Nigeria.
- About 30 knowledge based sessions and focus group discussions and activities.
- Opportunity to challenge and improve your personal leadership influence and impact.
- Obtain a youth democracy and good governance engagement toolkit (Video and Handbook – FREE)
- Opportunity to meet and engage with young democrats around the world.
- 10 day learning visit to an African country practising democracy.
- Get a chance to run for Office of President of DESPLAY Republic Season 8 among others.
No one completes the DESPLAY Africa program and remains the same.
Eligibility
Young people from Nigeria and any other African country between the ages of 18 – 35 years.
