FEMRITE – Uganda Women Writers Association was founded by Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut in 1995. The first meeting that gathered women writers was held in Mary’s Office at Makerere University where she was a lecturer in the Literature Department at the time. It was attended by Lillian Tindyebwa, Hilda Twongyeirwe, Ayeta Anne Wangusa, Dr Susan Kiguli, Margaret Ntakalimaze, Rosemary Kyarimpa, Philomena Rwabukuku and Judith Kakonge (RIP). The women were excited by Mary’s proposals and more meetings were held to brainstorm the formulation of a women writers’ association.
