The Thomson Reuters Foundation is launching a new programme in the Middle East and North Africa, working with journalists and photojournalists to produce outstanding media coverage of women’s stories.
Why? According to the Global Media Monitoring Project, in the Middle East and North Africa women are underrepresented in the media and news coverage frequently reinforces gender stereotypes.
Furthermore, across the region there are many women’s stories that must be told in more depth and for a wider audience – from entrepreneurial women who are challenging misconceptions, to women facing up to severe human rights abuses.
Accurate, high quality news coverage of women’s stories, and issues that predominantly affect women, can change the way societies treat women, can affect whether their rights are upheld, and can contribute to a change in how news outlets approach such stories.
Eligibility
- Journalists or photojournalists working for domestic media in the Middle East and North Africa
- You should be motivated to tell the stories of women in a way that goes against the norms of media coverage in the region.
- We welcome applications from both women and men. We believe the coverage of issues affecting women should not be left to female reporters alone.
- Journalists working in any medium may apply for the journalism scheme – print, radio, TV, online
- Must be fluent in Arabic, have a minimum of one year’s experience and working full-time for a media organisation (freelancers are eligible)

You can apply using the application form below. You will be asked to upload
