MSTCDC/YouLead Secretariat is collaborating with the African Governance Architecture (AGA) Secretariat under African Union Commission (AUC) Department of Political Affairs (DPA) and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretariat to develop a Continental Training Manual for African Emerging Leaders.
The African Union AGA Secretariat recognizes both the untapped potential of young people to be leaders, as well as the glaring capacity gap of young people to take on the baton, maintain the baton by staying true to the principles of transformative leadership. The manual will in particular be a continental resource for leadership training on democratic governance. The training manual and subsequent training program will work to increase the leadership capacity through a combined ‘nature’ and ‘nurture’ approach whereby targeted and conscious training programs are provided for the next generation of young leaders with specific mentoring and coaching arrangements.
The initiative arises out of the realization that many nations in Africa have a leadership deficit, as it is in other parts of the developed world. This has become apparent especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic where successful response and recovery was dependent on good leadership. It is time to engage our young people in leadership, give the necessary tools to transform systems more specifically democratic and governance systems that are clearly not working.
On the premise of the above context, we understand and fully support the need for a call for the development of a training manual that can produce the next generation of adaptive and transformative leaders in Africa committed to driving Africa’s democracy and good governance Agenda.
