Journalists from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda are invited to apply for our 2022 wildlife and conservation workshop, which will take place from March 28 to April 4 in Fort Portal, Uganda.
The workshop will give journalists an understanding of the threats facing wildlife and biodiversity in the region, and what is being done to combat them.
WORTH
- During the workshop, participants will gain a deeper understanding of conservation efforts in the region and learn how researchers, Indigenous groups, local communities and policymakers are protecting their ecosystems and addressing threats such as hunting, poaching and trafficking.
- Participants will engage in a combination of classroom-style study and field visits to select national parks, forest reserves and other areas to learn more about habitat restoration efforts and conservation solutions. They’ll also meet with experts to discuss the impacts of deforestation, land degradation and the climate crisis.
- In addition to these on-ground experiences, participants will engage in hands-on capacity-building sessions to develop their skills in mobile journalism, multimedia journalism, solutions journalism and data journalism, and learn how to improve their story pitches.
- EJN will bear the travel, accommodation, and meal costs of selected participants.
ELIGIBILITY
- Open to journalists from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Those based in Kampala and the Ugandan countryside are especially encouraged to apply.
- Self-motivated journalists interested in covering human-wildlife conflicts, poaching, trafficking and other wildlife crimes are invited to apply. We are especially eager to hear from journalists reporting on community-based conservation initiatives, grassroots solutions and policy actions presently underway to protect wildlife and manage habitats and natural resources.
- They welcome applications from journalists from print, television, online and/or radio, with a demonstrated track record of producing incisive, in-depth stories.
