Botswana’s youngest and most rated producer Bokang “BK” Proctor of Basement Records has vowed to support young talented and aspiring artists to showcase their talents and help them to make a breakthrough in the music industry of Botswana. Proctor told YouthhubAfrica in an interview.
Proctor, who is working on his latest album called “BK PROCTOR VOL 5 MIX ALBUM” which is set to be released later this year, added that Botswana has a lot of talented artists. However, most of them are not signed and are unable to record an album due to financial constraints. As a result, he added that his latest album will feature unknown, young Aspiring and Up-coming talented artists in order to groom and help them launch their new careers in the music industry.
In a press release he sent to YouthhubAfrica, proctor added that the initiative by Basement Records is set to give a chance to all those young artists to showcase their talent. “This album will have different Genres of music but most importantly the album will have a live element feel to it,” the press release noted. He reiterated during the interview that they want to give the audience the best of what Botswana talent has to offer by not just focusing on one genre of music.
Recently, Proctor released a promo track called “Anything featuring one of Botswana’s promising young Kwaito group called MMP Family. The song is the Official Promo Track for his up-coming album. The MMP Family was last year voted the Best Kwaito group at the 2012 Botswana Musician (BOMU) Awards.
Whilst there is a general concern that often talent searches are mostly restricted to Gaborone, Proctor assured Youthhub-Africa that they will reach out to artists from across the country so that there is a diverse talent pool to select from. “We are using Radio, Newspaper and social media such as Facebook and Twitter to scout for artists. So far we have auditioned artists from Francistown, Maun, Lobatse, Jwaneng, Mochudi, Palapye, Mahalapye,” Proctor underscored.
Encouraging the youths, proctor alluded that everyone think they can be an artist and that they can either sing or rap or be in the music industry, but there is more to it. As such, he stressed that young aspiring artists need to understand the path they want to take by bringing something fresh and unique. “You need to ask yourself as to what are you bringing to the table that is different and unique,” he said.
Proctor who has gained popularity as one of the most “versatile” producers in Botswana is the 2009 Botswana Music Union (BOMU) “Music Producer of the Year” award winner.
