I am intrigued by Uganda as a country. It is one of the countries in Africa I really want to visit and haven’t  had a chance to. Nevertheless, I have met many Ugandans in several meetings and platforms both online and offline. Recently, I began to compile a list of amazing Ugandan women who are using twitter to promote the work they do, catch fun and also positively represent their country as e-ambassadors. I have learnt a lot from following this amazing women. It is only natural that I recommend you follow them too. I present to you the 7 amazing Young Ugandan women to follow on Twitter in no particular order;

  1. Grace Natabaalo
    with close to 5000 followers (4937 followers) is a journalist and program associate at the African Centre for Media Excellence. She describes herself as crazy about social media and life. Grace has gained more than 1500 followers in the last one year. She had 3244 followers around this time last year. Grace regularly tweets about current affairs and news in Uganda and sometimes international news. Grace who first joined twitter on July 29, 2008 with @nattygrace, closed the account and moved to her current twitter account @natabaalo on December 6, 2009. Ms. Natabaalo holds a degree in Mass Communication from Makerere University and has had extensive training in online and multimedia journalism coupled with  internet technology in newsrooms.
  2. Maureen Agena 
    currently has 4386 followers and counting.Maureen is a blogger, New media trainer and a trained citizen Journalist. She has been working in Technology for Development fields for the last 4 years and specifically on the socio economic empowerment of rural communities. She holds an MSc in Information systems, a Bsc Information technology and a diploma in Introduction to internet Governace. She maintains a blog and is a founding member of the Girls Geek Kampala. She joined twitter on July 14, 2009 and has logged over 25,000 tweets averaging 20 tweets on a daily basis.
  3. Rosebell Kagumire
    is a Ugandan multimedia journalist working on peace and conflict issues in the Eastern Africa region. She is also an award winning blogger, her blog won the Waxal – Blogging Africa Awards,  the first African journalist blogging awards hosted by Panos Institute of West Africa in 2009.  She has experience in documenting and communicating women’s war experiences in Uganda, South Sudan and DR Congo and is also the coordinator of Africans Act 4 Africa, a network of African citizens and activists calling on African leaders to ACT for Africa. Rosebell who joined twitter on March 12, 2009 has logged 25,447 tweets and has over 9000 followers attracting averagely 1 new follower for every 3 tweets. Rosebell maintains a personal blog and tweets mainly about African issues, current affairs and travels widely.
  4. Evelyn Namara
    is a tech-chic and currently the country Director of Solar Sisters in Uganda. Evelyn who won the Anita Borg Change Agent Award 2012 has a backgound in Information Technology and has been involved in the open source movement on the African continent. Evelyn joined the micro-blogging site on October 31, 2009 and has logged 21,862 tweets as at January 28, 2013  amassing 3666 followers in the process. Evelyn’s tweets focuses on technology, sometimes music, entrepreneurship and her many adventures. At other times, she talks about topical issues in Uganda and the rest of the continent. Evelyn runs a personal blog (evelynnamara.com) and is widely travelled on the continent and beyond.
  5. Joy Doreen Biira
    is an anchor and reporter for Kenya Television Network. She describes herself as an environmentalist who loves nature and is God’s favoured one. Joy joined twitter on August 4, 2010 and has gained 9090 followers. Her followers have grown by more than 2000 in the last year alone. She has logged 10,842 tweets and has favorited as much as 1972 tweets. Joy tweets about current affairs in Kenya, Uganda and the entire East Africa and sometimes the entire continent. Her tweet also covers political happening in Kenya and Uganda.
  6. Catherine Byaruhanga
    is the BBC’s Uganda multi-media reporter. She has previously lived and worked in the UK before moving back to Uganda. She has an interest in business and economics. Her tweets cover national, regional and international politics, fashion and celebrity gossip. Her recent tweets have been devoted to the African Nations Cup currently ongoing in South Africa and the Obama inauguration events. Although she joined twitter late afternoon on April 30, 2009, she has only logged 1157 tweets and attracting an average of one follower for every tweet she puts on twitterville. She currently has 1634 followers. She explains on her twitter profile that the views expressed are not that of the BBC but hers.
  7. Charlotte Kemigyisha
    is the Communications Manager at Umeme Limited, Uganda’s Electicity Distribution Company. She describes herself as vivacious, tenacious, occasional blogger and fashionista. Her tweets, she says, are mostly personal. She tweets and retweets about Ugandan political life and history, economy, women issues and a bit of odd and interesting stories around the continent. She joined twitter on December 19, 2010 and has made 2754 followers with 4798 tweets sent.

Rotimi Olawale, co-founder of youthhubafrica.org is a youth development expert. For more than six years he has been involved in leading youth advocacy efforts mainly around the Millennium Development Goals. In 2006, he represented Nigeria as a youth ambassador at the United Nations Global Youth Leadership Summit held at the UN Headquarters in New York. Rotimi has held several global leadership positions including; member, UNFPA Global Youth Advisory Panel for 2 years; member, African Youth Panel. Rotimi is currently involved in shaping local, national and global policies to benefit youth and also leverage opportunities for young people. He was listed by the Nigerian government as one of 15 Nigerian youth on the world stage in 2008.
