If you have been following the recent development at the United Nations, there is an increasing commitment from the institution to redefine its working relationship for and with young people globally.
This redefinition started with the International Year of youth, continued with the UN High Level Meeting on Youth and more recently, when the UN Secretary General secured his second term to lead the UN, he made a commitment to making youth one of his top priorities.
As a follow up to the UN High Level Meeting on youth, UNHABITAT working in collaboration with several UN Agencies launched the Youth21 report. The report outlined several options to increasing youth engagements at the United Nations.
The launch of the report was followed by an online consultation and a Youth21 Building for Change Stakeholder Meeting which held in Nairobi Kenya from March 15 – 18, 2012.
The outcome of the Nairobi meeting now referred to as the Nairobi declaration puts flesh to some of the recommendation in the Youth21 report. It specifically provides guideline on selection of the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Youth and also modalities for establishing the UN permanent Forum on Youth and composition of a UN Youth Platform Assembly
