The soaring rate of unemployment in Nigeria is a worrying phenomenon. Quoting 2010 research studies by the National Bureau of Statistics, 32.5 million Nigerians are unemployed. There is an undeniable link between the high unemployment rate of Nigerians between the ages of 15-30 and the high rate of poverty and social malaise currently bedeviling the country.
To address this problem, Development Alternatives and Resource Center (DARC)has designed a program to help young graduates skill-up to make them more attractive to employers of labor; the premise being that Nigerian university graduates have relatively little job related skills and are ill-prepared for the job market. The Compete Cycle Program (CCP) is a project designed by DARC and Clinton Associates (UK) to increase the employability of Nigerian graduates by exposing them to the requirements and challenges of the job market.
The program will be developed to give a selected number of graduates an understanding of themselves, an insight into their capabilities and areas of strength, and an understanding of the requirements of the work environment. It will also give them an opportunity to meet with employers of labor and to be mentored by individuals with a track record of achievement in the work environment.
