Despite progress made in recent decades to realise girls’ and women’s right to education, the COVID-19 pandemic, conflict and climate-induced disasters are widening inequalities.

UNESCO believes in the transformative power of education to unlock the potential of women and girls, to advance gender equality, and to achieve just, equal and inclusive societies. The Transforming Education Summit convened by the UN Secretary-General last September called for a rebooting of education systems to address the gender-based barriers, stigma and discrimination that hold girls and other learners back from fulfilling their right to education and future life, work and leadership opportunities.
